I was born in Russellville, Arkansas, and grew up in rural northeast Texas. My dad was a saddle bronc rider (that’s him in the picture riding in one of the many small-town rodeos he competed in), and my mother was an insurance agent. For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be two things: a professional baseball player or a defense lawyer. My baseball career ended when I graduated high school, so I focused entirely on becoming a criminal trial lawyer.
I graduated from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts (PICTURE), and then, after a two-year stint as a high school teacher and baseball coach, I moved to New Orleans and went to law school at Loyola University. When I graduated, I did an internship with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office in Houston, Texas. I then hung out my shingle as a solo criminal defense lawyer.
Since 2006, I have focused solely on criminal defense, representing clients charged with state and federal crimes. I learned how to fight a criminal charge by fire in the prosecution-friendly courthouse of rural East Texas. I learned how to relentlessly defend a case despite bad facts and evidentiary rulings that don’t go my clients’ way.
After a 20-year career in the Texas courts, I moved to Georgia to be closer to family. Today, I am still a ranching lawyer. When I am not in court or preparing for trial, I am with my beloved Doberman on a ranch I share with my family in Wilkinson County.
